The Intruder
So, I'm currently working on a play called The Intruder by Maurice Maeterlinck. I'm doing it with a new theatre company that's just beginning to establish itself called Company D. They're interested in the works of Antonin Artaud and more stylised forms of European theatre, moving away from Naturalism and Realism. It's directed by David Scott, who has workshopped and written the three previous Company D productions.
The Intruder (or L'Intruse as written by Maeterlinck who was Belgian), written in 1890, is a quirky symbollist play and we're doing it in a very interesting mix of styles. The language is quite poetical and we're attempting to speak it in a naturalistic manner, but conversely, our physicality is very stylised and slow, trying to tap into Maeterlinck's idea of actors being like marionettes and his idea of static theatre.
Physically, it's quite difficult because I'm standing still, and very upright for the entirity of the play. Who'd have thought that standing still could be so exhausting!!
We'll be performing it in Smock Alley Theatre for two weeks from March 18th. I'm playing the part of Ursula, the eldest daughter. I'll post some pics from rehearsals soon, when I have them.
